Patterns on the Skins of Organic Vegetables (after Kitchen Constellations)
I was thinking
about the liquid nature
of soup and stews
realize the trimming
I was taught to do is
merely cosmetic
now I think
of necessary scraps
I threw away
now I think about
the complicity of
beet and radish tails
carrot tops, kale ribs
cauliflower cores
and the necessity of
the whole person

Scientific American (after Psychology Today)
tidal interactions
a squash for the sun
an orange for the earth
a garlic bulb for the moon
gravity wells
a yellow onion
on a suspended dish cloth
clouds
steam forming beneath
boiling saucepan water
your infectious laughter
as I pontificate on
scantily understood subjects

I Ching, Hexagram 4 (after Mountain Over Lake)
August, a pond in a hollow
on the Appalachian Trail
a climb down considered
and discarded, faced with
dense head high foliage
we don’t even try to part
returning, handfuls of
discovered blackberries
jokes about bears
returned home, I heat food
in the cast iron skillet
you gifted me the year before
October, I touch on the superficiality
of barely connected relationships
where once rested juice smeared skin
now anger and resentment flare
our days get shorter
