environmental webs
dragging us to the moon

Séance

you were seen
eating a delicious book, 
basting the binding
seasoning pages with ink
cutting paragraphs into pasta strips
tripping on wise cracks at the séance 
because you couldn’t put it down

you passed a soup tureen and hoarded
verbs and bon mots to yourself
filled pockets with pronouns and
prepositions to nibble on in the studio
after the lights came back on

you were unable
to understand ectoplasmic voices
table rapping, and sad wraiths
in spite of  the words 
you swallowed, engendered, gave birth to
